Alberta solar FAQs

Is solar worth it in Alberta?

Yes. Alberta is one of the best provinces in Canada for solar ROI. With 2,300+ sunshine hours per year, all-in electricity rates around 20–25¢/kWh rising 3–5% annually, retail-rate net billing, and CEIP 100% upfront financing in 26+ municipalities — Alberta homeowners typically achieve payback in 7–10 years, then generate free electricity for another 15–20 years.

What is CEIP and how do I qualify?

CEIP (Clean Energy Improvement Program) is a property-tax-based financing model administered by Alberta Municipalities. It covers up to 100% of your solar installation cost (max $50,000 residential), repaid over up to 20 years through your property tax bill. To qualify: you must be the legal owner of an existing residential property in a participating municipality, be current on all property taxes, and have no outstanding property-secured debt arrears.

Is Calgary CEIP open right now?

Calgary's CEIP has periodically paused due to high demand. Always check calgary.ca for current intake status before applying. If paused, you can prepare your EnerGuide evaluation and contractor quotes so you're first in line when it reopens.

Do I pay for the bidirectional meter or interconnection in Alberta?

No. Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation explicitly prohibits utilities from charging homeowners for the cost of the bidirectional meter upgrade or grid interconnection. These are provided free.

What's the difference between CEIP and a regular solar loan?

CEIP financing is attached to your property, not your personal credit. It doesn't appear on your personal credit report, transfers to the new owner if you sell, and is repaid through your existing property tax bill — no separate monthly loan payment. Interest rates are set by each municipality and are typically below market rates.

Can I stack CEIP with other rebates?

Yes. CEIP participants are explicitly encouraged to stack with other eligible rebates. You can combine CEIP financing with any municipal or utility rebates still active in your area (e.g., ENMAX solar rebate programs). The Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applications in February 2024 and is no longer stackable for new applicants.
